Otsego County Library, Gaylord, MI – “A Cloud Over The Land”

Deborah Richmond, Historian of the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, will be presenting the tragic story of the Burt Lake Burnout, an event that occurred in 1900 and resulted in the dispossession of the Band’s reservation land. This event is a significant chapter in the history of the Burt Lake Band, highlighting the injustices faced by Indigenous communities in the United States.

The presentation will delve into the historical context surrounding the Burt Lake Burnout, exploring the political, social, and economic factors that contributed to this tragic event. Additionally, Richmond will shed light on the impact of the burnout on the Burt Lake Band, both in the immediate aftermath and in the years that followed.

By sharing this story, Deborah Richmond aims to raise awareness about the experiences of the Burt Lake Band and the injustices they have faced throughout history.
