The woods of Northern Michigan, the homeland of the Burt Lake
Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians, has provided gifts from the
land in the form of food for generations upon generations.

This foraging book is an introduction to finding forty different foods such
as berries, leeks, mushrooms and wild rice, to name just a few. The
author explains how to harvest, process, prepare and store them.
She also includes recipes using these foods and individual tribal
citizens’ personal memories and current stories about harvesting
them.

In addition, the Ojibwe language is provided for each food
and includes a link to an online pronunciation n guide created by
language instructor, Margaret Noodin.

About the Author:  Kathy Kae has a masters degree in U.S. history with a focus on Great Lakes Anishinaabe history. She is an adopted citizen of theBurt Lake Band of Ottawa &Chippewa Indians and is the director of the Traditional Foods Project as well as a grant writer. She is also a black ash basket weaver and is passionate about passing traditional knowledge on for future generations.
