LORETTA PARKEY~~Tribal Enrollment Officer and Traditional Arts Elder Specialist

Booshoo !! My name is Loretta L. Parkey. I reside in Brutus, MI along with my husband, Kenneth and two sons, Duane and Randy. I also have a daughter Renae and two gorgeous grandchildren who reside in Florida. I am the Tribal Enrollment Officer and Traditional Arts Elder Specialist and have been working with the Burt Lake Band since 1981 in various positions.

My hobbies are genealogical research, collecting dream catchers and knick-knacks and an occasional catnap. I am also an avid bingo player.

KATHY KAE~~Traditional Arts Director

Osiyo! (Miinwaa Aanii!) I am Eastern Cherokee and am originally from Central Lower Michigan. It is my pleasure to be the director of the Traditional Arts Program for the Burt Lake Band. Funded by a grant from the Administration for Native Americans, this Project is helping reintegrate the Traditional Arts back into the Band to be preserved for future generations. A few of these Arts are Black Ash Basketry, Quill Box Making, Beading, etc. Since I have a strong passion for these Arts, I feel privileged to take part in this.

Another of my tasks is to maintain the Tribal website which will be an ongoing endeavor as the Burt Lake Band continues to flourish.

A few of the hobbies I enjoy are drawing, beadworking, woodworking and anything to do with the outdoors.

MARY SLOCUM~~Traditional Arts Coordinator and Tribal Newspaper Editor

My name is Mary Slocum, but most of you may know me as councilman Hanks’ sister. I have been the secretary of the enrollment committee for the past five years, and have worked on the S.E.D.S. project along with Mrs. Isabel Scollon. Most recently I have been putting together the newsletter, in an effort to keep the membership up-to-date on the current happenings of the tribe. I am also the Coordinator for the Traditional Arts Project.

I have enjoyed my time spent at the membership meetings, and have found that the learning experiences presented to me, have made me a more rounded individual. I would encourage everyone to attend.

I live in East Lansing; I am married, and have one child. My interests are gardening, crafting, and I enjoy camping.
